Playing with Fire Can Be Safe: HSE
In fire emergencies, rescue personnel are expected to put their lives at risk to protect citizens in danger. Hence, it is important that health and safety regulatory bodies extend equal protection to these people who are serving the public.
Fire service employers and firefighters’ unions are in unison over the safety requirements and have welcomed a new plan set forth by HSE in coordination with the Government’s Office of the Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser (OCFRA), the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) and the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).
The guidelines have clearly acknowledged that fire workers are putting themselves at risk while protecting others and that they are aware of their own safety. This noble characteristic is what sets these firefighters a class apart and earn them the respect they deserve.
The Health and Safety at Work etc., Act 1974 does its best to protect the rescue workers in every way.
While protecting people and property in dangerous situations, the firefighters may have to take unforeseen risks according to the situation. Such heroic acts need the safety net of protection laws. The new guidelines have ensured that a proper balance is achieved in their daily professional lives.
