Watch your troubles float away with Wish Lanterns
Chinese flying lanterns traditionally were not associated with festivals and celebratory occasions. Initially, they were a military tactic, launched to great heights in order to attract attention from allies in times of war. Later, they became an integral part of festivals and various ceremonies in the far east, and they are now used in many events, weddings, parties, and feast days all around the world. There is a religious overtone, not merely a sentimental one, to the launching of a lantern. Traditionally in China, the floating of a lantern into the sky symbolized a journey towards heaven. Every time a lantern was launched therefore, a prayer, and a communication with the Gods was being made. There were various symbolic codes attached to lanterns. The flame at the centre of the rice paper dome stood for leadership, and if the lantern flew high and far away it would symbolize wealth. A lantern soaring towards heaven signaled the lifting of all anxieties and worries. Who needs therapy when all you have to do to dispel all your troubles, is launch your own Wish Lantern?
